# Scales Before Music

*Sample essay, written for this pack. The people in it are invented.*

Every beginner on an instrument hears the same bargain: do your scales now, and later you can play what you like. It is a kind offer and it is wrong. It makes the drill a fee, and the freedom something you buy with it afterwards.

Watch a good player improvise. Her hand goes somewhere she did not plan. It gets there because ten thousand slow repetitions have made the distance between two notes a thing the hand simply knows. The drill has not been left behind. It is what the freedom is made out of, link by link.

This is why people who skip the dull part do not arrive at a looser sort of playing. They arrive at a narrower one. They can only go where they have already thought of going.

There is no moment in a musician's life when the chain comes off. There is only a day, usually unnoticed, on which what has been holding her starts to feel like lift.
