# Scales Before Music

Sample essay

**Thesis:** Dull daily drills are not the price of freedom on an instrument; they are what freedom is made from.

**Allegory:** An iron chain pegged in a field rises link by link until its last links have become birds.

**Transformation:** chain_opposite

**Why this one:** The same object carries both halves, so it refuses the idea that drill and freedom are opposed.

**How the image carries the thesis:** The essay says practice does not buy freedom later; it turns into it. So there is no break in the image: one chain, one path, each link a little more wing than the last. You cannot point to where the drill ended.

**Cold read, before the note:** A stranger would say it shows: A chain nailed into a field rises, and its links slowly turn into flying birds. and that it argues: What ties you down can become the thing that lets you fly.

**Rejected allegories:**
- A hammer whose handle grows leaves. Says work bears fruit, which is a cliche and misses the turn from constraint to freedom.
- A birdcage with an open door. Says escape from drill, the opposite of the thesis.
