# Night School

Sample essay

**Thesis:** A town is steered less by its monuments than by small things someone keeps lit every evening.

**Allegory:** A giant candle stands on the rocks and guides ships at sea, while a real lighthouse sits dark and tiny at its foot.

**Transformation:** size_inversion

**Why this one:** The inversion of scale is the whole argument: the humble thing is the big one.

**How the image carries the thesis:** The essay is about a teacher who opens a room every evening and is never thanked. So the candle takes the lighthouse's job and its size, and the ships steer by it. The stone tower, the monument, is the small thing here.

**Cold read, before the note:** A stranger would say it shows: A huge lit candle on a shore at night, far taller than a tiny lighthouse, with ships out on the water. and that it argues: A small flame can do more to guide people than a great monument.

**Rejected allegories:**
- A lighthouse made of books. Praises learning in general and loses the point about small, repeated acts.
- A figure carrying a town on her back. Makes it about heroic burden; the essay distrusts heroes.
