Open source

DiceBear

A library an agent can call, not a skill: turns any name into a consistent SVG avatar, in 63 styles.

Install

From the terminal, no code

npx dicebear create lorelei -o ./avatars --count 10

As a JavaScript library

npm install @dicebear/core

Commands are copied word for word from the project's README. Read them before you run them.

Why it was picked

The same name always gives the same avatar, so nobody has to upload or draw a picture, and most of its 63 styles need no credit. It is a code library, not a skill, and it is here because an agent can call it for this one job.

Why it exists

A product with accounts needs a picture for everyone, and most people never upload one.

What you get

SVG avatars, one per name or ID. The command line can also generate files in bulk.

Styles by licence

  • CC0 1.0: blobs, cameo, cats, clay, constellation, critters, cutouts, disco, dogs, gaze, glass, identicon, initial-face, initials, landscape, line-face, loops, lorelei, lorelei-neutral, marbles, moods, notionists, notionists-neutral, open-peeps, patchwork, pixel-art, pixel-art-neutral, pixelbot, planets, rings, shadows, shape-grid, shapes, slice, sprouts, squircles, stack, stripes, thumbs, triangles, voxel-art, voxel-bot, waves, weave The safest: no credit needed. 44 styles.
  • MIT: icons Keep the licence notice. 1 style.
  • CC BY 4.0: adventurer, adventurer-neutral, big-ears, big-ears-neutral, big-smile, croodles, croodles-neutral, dylan, fun-emoji, glyphs, micah, miniavs, personas, toon-head Allowed, including commercially, if you credit the artist. 14 styles.
  • avataaars, avataaars-neutral, bottts, bottts-neutral Marked free for personal and commercial use, under terms on their own sites that we have not read. 4 styles.

How it works

  1. Choose a style and check its licence in the list above.
  2. Tell your agent to use DiceBear with that style.
  3. Give it your names or IDs, and keep the files or the names.

What it needs

Node.js for the commands shown. The library also needs its style package, @dicebear/styles.

In short

Pick this for many consistent avatars from names. For one character made by hand, use a character maker.

Worth knowing

This is a library an agent can call, not a skill: it has no SKILL.md, so your agent needs to be told to use it. The code is MIT, but each avatar style has its own licence, chosen by its artist. The list above groups all 63 as declared in the project's style files at the time we checked. Check the licence of the style you choose before you use it: dicebear.com/licenses lists them. CC0 is the safest group. CC BY styles need a credit to the artist. We did not read the separate terms on the Avataaars and Bottts sites, so read those first. The Notionists style is named after the look of a real product, so we would not choose it for a brand. The free web address for avatars sends the name you use as a seed to their server, so do not use an email address there. SkillLift has not run this.
